Set up Kirat
There are three ways to use Claude, and each one installs Kirat differently. Find yours first, then follow only those steps. Most people need one.
Where do you talk to Claude?
Open the Claude app. At the top you see the tabs Chat, Cowork and Code. In Code, the control under the message box says Local or Cloud.
You use several of them? Set up each one. The extension does not reach Code sessions, and nothing on your computer reaches a cloud session.
Not supported: chat on claude.ai in the browser, chat in the Claude mobile apps, and Cowork tasks that run in the cloud.
Before you start: two API keys
Kirat uses your own keys. OpenAI and Google bill you directly for what you use; we never see your keys. Getting them is the slow part, because of the providers' sign-up and billing forms.
OpenAI: on platform.openai.com, open API keys and create a key. Switch on billing and set a monthly limit; a separate project for Kirat is a good idea.
Google Gemini: on aistudio.google.com, click Get API key. Switch on billing for the project behind it and set a budget.
Keep both keys at hand (for example in your password manager). You enter them in the next step.
Optional, minimal permissions: at OpenAI, a restricted key is enough, with “List models” on Read and “Model capabilities” on Request, everything else on None. A Gemini key from Google AI Studio is already limited to the Gemini API.
Claude app, Chat tab
Unzip the download (Windows: right-click → Extract All…; Mac: double-click). You get a folder called
kirat. In the Claude app, open Settings → Extensions → Advanced settings and click Install Extension…. Choose the
.mcpbfile from thekiratfolder. Or drag the file onto the Extensions page.Enter both API keys and click Install. The app warns that the extension is not verified by Anthropic. That is expected for every extension installed from a file.
Start a new chat and type:
Use the Kirat extension and call kirat_status.
Both members should be available, and the key check should sayokfor both keys.
Ready-made templates (decide, review, critique, brainstorm) are under the + button in the message box.
Code tab with “Local”, or Claude Code in a terminal or VS Code
This way needs one command in a terminal. The Code tab's local sessions and Claude Code share their settings, so you install it once for both.
Unzip the download and move the
kiratfolder into your home folder (Mac:/Users/<you>, Windows:C:\Users\<you>). Leave it there: Claude Code runs Kirat from that folder. If your Windows user name contains a space, useC:\kiratinstead and writeC:/kirat/claude-codein the command below.Open a terminal (Mac: the Terminal app; Windows: PowerShell) and type
node --version. If it shows v20 or higher, go on. Otherwise install the LTS version from nodejs.org, then open a new terminal.Run this command in the terminal:
claude plugin install kirat --marketplace ~/kirat/claude-codeIf
claudeis unknown, install Claude Code first (see code.claude.com, Quickstart). If the command is too old, runclaude updatefirst.Enter both keys when asked. If nothing asks, type
/plugin configure kirat@kiratin a Claude Code session in the terminal.Start a new local session (or restart Claude Code) and type:
Use the Kirat extension and call kirat_status.
Templates in Claude Code: /kirat:decide, /kirat:review, /kirat:critique, /kirat:brainstorm.
Cloud sessions: Code tab with “Cloud”, claude.ai/code, mobile app
Everything happens in the settings of your cloud environment, in the browser or the Claude app. No terminal. You do it once per environment; every new session in it then has Kirat.
Open the environment's settings. In the Claude app: Code → the environment control under the message box → Cloud → hover over your environment → gear icon. On claude.ai/code it is the same control under the message box: hover over the environment, then click the settings icon.
Add your keys as network secrets. Under Network secrets, click Add secret twice and keep the type Bearer:
Name Allowed websites Header name Prefix Value OpenAI api.openai.comAuthorizationBeareryour OpenAI key Gemini generativelanguage.googleapis.comx-goog-api-keyempty (clear it) your Gemini key Nobody in a session can read these keys, not even Claude. On Team and Enterprise plans, the section may be missing or offer only a short form; then ask your admin, or enter the keys under Environment variables instead, one per line:
KIRAT_OPENAI_API_KEY=…andKIRAT_GEMINI_API_KEY=…(everyone who uses the environment can read those).Network access. If it says Full, there is nothing to do. Otherwise choose Custom, tick Also include default list of common package managers and add
kirat.aito the allowed domains. With environment variables instead of network secrets, also addapi.openai.com.Setup script. In your download, open
START-HERE.html(double-click, it opens in your browser) and click Copy setup block. Paste it at the very top of the Setup script field, above anything already there. The download address in the block is part of your purchase: don't publish it.
Save and start a new session in this environment. This first session runs the setup and usually doesn't show Kirat yet, because it started before the setup finished. Start a second new session and type:
Call kirat_status.
Both members should be available, and the key check should sayok. From then on, every new session has Kirat.
Didn't work? kirat_status names the key or host to check. If Kirat is still missing in the second session, the setup log says “Kirat setup failed” and why. After fixing it, change the setup script (an empty line is enough), otherwise new sessions keep the old state.
Before you rely on it, read the cloud limits: among other things, the daily budget counts per session, so set spending limits at OpenAI and Google.
Still stuck?
- Claude doesn't know Kirat: check which way you use (section 01). An extension in the Chat tab does not show up in Code sessions.
- A member is not available: its API key is missing or wrong.
kirat_statussays which one. - Calls are blocked: the daily budget is used up. Raise it in Kirat's settings or wait until the next day (UTC).
The README.md in your download covers settings, costs, updates and more problems. Kirat comes without support. If it does not run in a supported setup, you can ask for a refund within 14 days: write to support@kirat.ai with your order number and the output of kirat_status (it never contains your keys).
